The Rhone Valley produces reliable full flavoured reds based on the Grenache and Syrah grapes. Cotes and Village wines are full of character - smooth yet spicy; Chateauneuf is a weightier proposition that drinks a lot younger than it used to.

Herbert Valayer's 55 ha Domaine, built up by four generations of winegrowers, is located on the hills of St Maurice and Vinsobres Villages with the winery in the recently renovated 16th century Ch de Durre. The vineyards, located on sunny south facing hills and stoney plateaus, are all in the Cotes du Rhone Village AOC. The company is now headed by oenologist Hubert, assisted by his father and brother; his time spent in Australia is reflected in a modern style of Rhone wines. Total production is 2000hl.

Domaine de Ch Fargueirol is situated on a plateau between Orange and Avignon at a height of 115m. The 40ha are mainly planted with Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre. The Chateau dates back to 1344 and has been under the control of the Revoltier family since 1976.

Domaine de Durre - is a 75% Grenache, 25% Syrah blend, mainly from declassified village wines. The large proportion of Grenache gives a fruity, easy to drink with good structure.

Vinsobres - recently given its own AC status - is from 25 to 60 year old vines. The blend of 70% Grenache, 20% syrah, 10% Mourvèdre undergoes a long fermentation and oak ageing, resulting in a full bodied, spicy wine with balanced vanilla notes.

Ch Fargueirol - is made from 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% other permitted varietals including Mouvedre and Cinsault. It has a firmly structured traditional style with chunky tannins and complex ripe fruit.
