MORGENROT UTIEL-REQUENA AND VALENCIA

Valencia borders the Mediterranean with Catalunya to the north and Alicante to the south. Utiel-Requena DO is located between the coast and the high plateau (La Mancha) of Central Spain producing mainly red wines. DO Valencia wines come from four sub zones within the main region.

Bodegas Aranleón
Aranleón's winery (pictured above) was built in 1927 in the small village of Los Marcos, located in the hills 60 miles inland from the Valencia coast. The wines either have a Valencia or Utiel-Requena DO.

The winery still uses the original old tile fermentation vats, now coated with epoxy resin. In addition they have now installed new stainless steel vats and 40ltr barrels for selected fermentation.

In 2006 the winery was enlarged to create a cellar for oak ageing barrels, bottling lines and a warehouse. The temperature and humidity are controlled to be kept constant throughout the year.

The winery operates on "gravity flow" whereby the grapes are unloaded at ground level, moving downwards through the various levels of production to finally be bottled 9 metres underground.

Aranleón own 120 ha of organic vineyards in four different areas: Fontanars Valley and Casa de les Vides in Utiel, El Churro and Los Rincones in La Portera (Requena). 90 ha consist of old bush vines of Bobal, Monastrell, Tempranillo and Macabeo in non irrigated, poor sandy soil. The remaining 30 ha were planted in 1998 in light clay and sandy soils with drip irrigation and are trellised vines of Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne and Marselan.

Aranleón are organic producers eliminating the use of herbicides and pesticides and using a controlled approach to irrigation. All vineyards were certified organic in 2007.

As befits their values they are focused on "inclusivity." The winery has been designed to be fully accessible for anyone with disabilities, and labels are printed in Braille as well as regular type.

Bodegas Aranleón:

Solo Blanco (Valencia) is composed of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Sauvignon and 30% Macabeo aged on the lees for 4 months. It has fresh varietal aromas of grapefruit, orange, pineapple and tropical fruits with brioche notes; it is full bodied and creamy from the lees contact.

Solo Tinto (Utiel-Requena) is a blend of 40% Tempranillo and 40% Bobal from their old vines with 20% younger Syrah. It has 13 months in new and used Hungarian oak with 2 months battonage. Plenty of Mediterranean herbs show in its ripe berried nose, with fig and toasty oak on the palate. Sweet tannins promise a five year shelf life.

El Árbol (Valencia) has 30% Monastrell and 30% Tempranillo from old vines, the rest of the blend composed of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah with 18 months in new French oak. An intense berried wine with oaky notes, the full palate is rounded off with sweet cinnamon spice. Will easily keep for ten years.

Helix (Utiel-Requena) is 100% Tempranillo from selected vines with 18 month ageing in new French oak with twice weekly battonage for 3 months and minimal filtering on bottling. A full bouquet of truffles, raisins and balsamic notes with liquorice coming through on an elegant and extremely long finish. The wooden label is an interesting curiosity.
